5 Things You Should Know About Wine

Updated: Sep 26, 2022

What is your favorite wine? How does it taste to you? What does it smell like? And what does the color of the wine say about the wine? These are questions that you may ask yourself when you sip on your favorite wine. Well, we have you covered. Here are 5 things you should know about wines:

1.) Wines types are named after the type of grapes. - There are about 24 different wine grapes. But here are 7 different wine grape varieties that are well known. They are Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux Blend, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese,Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, and Sauvignon Blanc. (we will have another blog about each wine variety.

2. The color of your wine comes from the grape skin, not the juice - When you purchased a grape have you ever squeezed it to see the color of the juice? Or bit into the grape to see the color? Did you notice that the colors are still golden or almost colorless? When wine is made, grapes are pressed in the beginning stages of winemaking. The skin of the grapes then sits in the grape juice to steep inside the juice. Most lighter wines will have the skin removed to prevent the color from changing. For example, a Chardonnay.

3. Wine bottle colors matter - Normally when you purchase wines you will see different bottle colors. Have you ever wondered why they are different colors? Dark green bottles are used for reds, light green for dry whites, and manly colorless bottles for sweet wines. Bottlers do this because sunlight can begin to break down the tannins and antioxidants you want to keep in the wine. Dark glass bottles tend to decrease the odds of oxidation and increase the storage life. This is more important than you think.

4. There are 3 popular wine regions - The three most popular wine regions are France, Spain, and Italy. They are all known for producing the largest amounts of bulk wines, they produce some of the world's best wines AND they are the source of the most grape varieties. Our Favorite is the French region. The main wine areas of the French wine region map are Bordeaux, Burgundy, Languedoc, Champagne, the Loire Valley, Alsace, Rhône, Provence and Corsica.

The are approximately 1204 grapes in a bottle of wine - That's it that's the fact :-). Who would have thought that many grapes can be in one bottle?
